What is the problem with using mercury and silver amalgam fillings in the mouth?
Using amalgam fillings to restore decayed teeth has been happening for decades. However, comprehensive scientific research has insights into the effects of the mercury content of these fillings. We believe that our dental health influences our overall health, a standpoint that discourages us from using silver-mercury amalgam fillings.
Studies have shown that mercury continually escapes from the amalgam filling under normal conditions, increased by daily activities like chewing, drinking hot liquids, brushing, or receiving dental polishes. Once released as a vapour, this mercury is inhaled into the lungs and can become toxic.
What exactly is mercury?
Mercury, a substance banned in several products in numerous countries due to its neurotoxic properties, is still endorsed by some dental associations. We oppose this view, given the established link between neurotoxins and the health of the body’s nervous tissue.
Mercury is harmful as a poison. It is one of the most potent naturally occurring poisonous substances. In line with this, we firmly believe that even the smallest amount of mercury poses a risk, which is why it has no place in our holistic practice.
What are the results of using mercury fillings?
Syndromes and diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, have been linked to mercury exposure. This exposure might also cause chronic fatigue, tremors, heart disease, depression and even lower immunity levels–leading to an increased susceptibility to infections.
Mercury can also pass into organs through the nerves, blood, and lymph system. Its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier is most concerning, as it could damage the nervous system as a whole.
What should I do if I have mercury fillings in place?
The number of mercury fillings a person has is directly proportional to the level of mercury present in their brain.
Prioritizing our patients’ health and safety, we refrain from using amalgam fillings and follow safety protocols established by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology when removing them.
