A large part of the holistic dental practice is the abstinence of the use of mercury. This substance has been shown, in many research studies, to have a detrimental impact on the body. The reason for the large list of negative effects is that mercury is a toxic substance. Seeing the truth about mercury, Dr. Titania Tong has chosen to offer her patients healthier, safer alternatives to mercury laden amalgam fillings, which are fifty percent mercury.
Even when contained in a dental filling with other metals, mercury has several properties that make it unsafe. In a filling, mercury releases vapours when the filling material is warmed up, as occurs during chewing and even brushing your teeth. On the mildest note, amalgam fillings are also known to produce fractures in teeth due to their rate of expansion and contraction. As a way to protect her patients’ oral and general health, Dr. Tong has assembled a variety of alternatives to amalgam fillings.
We believe that we should take no chances with our patients’ health. When a patient is in need of minor tooth repair with a dental filling, we use biocompatible materials such as composite resin or ceramic. These fillings are not only free of toxic mercury, but have been shown to bond better to the tooth, creating a longer lasting repair.
Dental crowns are used to repair teeth that have been damaged beyond the capabilities of a filling. This restoration “caps?” the damaged tooth, restoring the most natural structure, durable enough to withstand the bite force of chewing. Crowns made from ceramic, porcelain, and even gold are highly aesthetic, compatible with natural tissues, and incredibly strong for superior function.
There are several advantages to tooth repair with mercury-free materials, such as:
