As a professional dental clinic in Central Hong Kong, we deliver a wide variety of gentle family dentistry services to our patients. TMJ treatment is just one way we help to improve their lives.
TMJ disorder causes a great deal of discomfort. Each person has temporomandibular joints located at the back of the jaw. They are responsible for facilitating proper movement needed during daily functions such as speaking and chewing. People with TMJ disorders experience pain in these joints and in surrounding muscles.
Jaw joints act as a hinge, with bones covered in cartilage to help keep smooth range of motion. People with TMJ disorders may have erosion or misalignment of the disks or cartilage, or joint damage. Some people have inherent risk factors such as jaw injury, chronic tooth grinding, and certain types of arthritis.
The most common symptoms include:
Biting or chewing on hard objects, grinding teeth, biting fingernails, and excessive gum chewing can all put stress on TMJs. In addition, improper bite alignment can trigger TMD.
During our initial examination, we look at and feel your jaw as you open and close it, paying careful attention to range of motion and areas of discomfort. X-rays can also be useful in diagnosing TMJ disorders.
Once we have a confirmed diagnosis of TMD, we evaluate treatment options. Many patients find relief using a night guard to absorb impact that occurs during nightly teeth clenching. Other patients may need dental treatment to appropriately realign the bite.
If you are in the Central Hong Kong area and have been suffering with TMJ pain, call us today at 852 2810-1801 to schedule an appointment.
