Dr. Titania Tong is a biological dentist. For more than two decades, she has been caring for the smiles of patients in Central, HK, utilizing biocompatible materials and techniques that promote whole body wellness. She urges you to consider how each member of your family can benefit from healthy, holistic dental services.
Whether you call it tooth decay or cavities, dental caries is one of the most prevalent diseases in children. Fortunately, it is also highly preventable. In Dr. Tong’s holistic care, cavity prevention is deeply-rooted in healthy nutrition and oral habits, rather than just the application of topical fluoride.
Using educational tools and hands-on instruction, Dr. Tong guides parents in handling issues such as:
With an early plan of holistic dental care, your child may never have a cavity. Why is this so important? Since baby teeth are destined to be replaced by secondary dentition, it is still common practice to fill cavities with silver-colored amalgam, which contains mercury. The potentially harmful effects of toxins from tooth decay and mercury are cumulative. They build up and remain in a child’s body over time, even after the tooth is gone. Dr. Tong uses only mercury-free and BPA-safe composite materials when a filling is necessary.
Good dental habits tend to last a lifetime, if they can survive adolescence. During this period, it is natural for kids to push boundaries, including oral hygiene. At this age they may resist almost any structure mandated by parents.
As a dental professional (whom your child may have been visiting as long as he or she can remember), Dr. Tong holds something of an authoritative position. She uses this advantage to gently reinforce the benefits of dental care from the patient’s perspective. She talks about avoiding the embarrassment and possible ridicule associated with bad breath or unattractive teeth. She discusses peer pressure to participate in dangerous behavior such as smoking, using smokeless tobacco, consuming alcohol, or taking illicit drugs and their effect on dental health. With older children, she may explain costs, inconvenience, and discomfort associated with future dental work necessitated by neglect now.
Most importantly, she encourages kids to feel good about taking responsibility for care of their mouths and health.
Most new parents direct the majority of resources toward family care, and their own dental health may take a back seat. As children grow, finances and time constraints may ease up a bit. That makes it a perfect time to get oral health back on track.
Even if you haven’t seen a dentist for a while, you won’t get a lecture from Dr. Tong. You will get a treatment plan tailored to your needs. She helps you prioritize treatment to get your mouth healthy. This may include:
Eventually, we find ourselves looking after a senior family member . . . or becoming one! Dr. Tong also provides care focused on the needs of mature patients. At this stage, chronic dry mouth may become an issue due to medical conditions or medications. Nutrition and management of gum disease become critical to overall wellness. There may be a need for tooth replacement with dental implants or implant-retained dentures. Dental care, integrated with other healthcare providers, is available for Dr. Tong’s older patients.
