When we see our children in distress or sickness, our hearts break. Even the pain of a toothache can be very upsetting. While there are ways to repair cavities, we also like to educate our patients on the various causes of cavities and ways in which they can be prevented. Cavities are a common dental problem that stem from harmful oral bacteria which are sometimes referred to as dental caries. When a cavity develops, it is important to remove decayed tooth material and fill the hole caused by bacteria. Depending on the size of the cavity, repair may consist of a small BPA-free composite filling or may require a larger restoration such as an inlay, onlay, or crown. Rather than repair cavities, what we would prefer to do is help our patients avoid this uncomfortable dental problem with preventive care and education.

The first step in preventing cavities is to understand what can lead to this problem in the first place.

  • Harmful bacteria thrive in the moist, warm oral environment. They are further encouraged when sugary foods are consumed. This does not mean only candy, cookies, and sodas are unhealthy for teeth, but also refined carbohydrates such as pasta and bread. Children and adults alike are encouraged to consume healthy meals and snacks like crunchy fruits and vegetables, and to brush teeth twice a day and floss daily. To really protect teeth against bacteria, brushing may be done after every meal. If brushing cannot be done, chewing gum containing xylitol can increase saliva flow and dilute sugar residue in the mouth.
  • Individuals who struggle with dry mouth are at an increased risk of cavities, as are those who have had cavities in the past or who have a family history of cavities.
  • In addition to sugary foods, cavities become a greater risk when acidic foods and beverages are consumed. Foods and beverages with a high acid content include citrus fruits, lemons, and even sports drinks.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to tell if a cavity has formed until a tooth has been damaged. Sensitivity and pain are signs that a tooth has been affected by dental caries, and requires repair. Dr. Tong works with patients to detect dental problems using the latest diagnostic testing, and provides gentle care to repair tooth damage.
